In the department of “not what I expected on a tropical island!” Kaua‘i is actually home to a stunning gorge that is every bit as striking as the Grand Canyon. Waimea Canyon is 14 miles long, a mile wide and 3,600 feet deep. You can hike in and out of the canyon, or just enjoy the panoramic views from Kōkeʻe State Park. The drive up to the canyon is pretty spectacular, too, so be prepared to stop often to take some great selfies.

The Valley Isle is famously home to many magnificent waterfalls. Two of the easiest to see are the 80-foot Wailua Falls and 150-foot ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls (literally, “rolling shrimp” in Hawaiian), both on the east side of the island. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a helicopter tour to the summit of Wai‘ale‘ale Crater, where you can be surrounded by waterfalls on 270 degrees.

Whichever islands you pick, don’t worry, because everywhere you venture in Hawai‘‘i, you’re going to find natural splendor that is simply breathtaking.
