The Marylhurst School

The Marylhurst School is an independent, inclusive, progressive education community serving preschool through 8th grade students. Located on 38 forested acres, our campus offers a nature-rich environment where children can come into their own. Through an inquiry-based approach driven by children’s interests, questions, and wonderings, our year-long thematic curriculum provides a framework for deep and meaningful learning. Our core principle is to guide children into becoming confident lifelong learners, courageous explorers, imaginative creators, and ethical, engaged citizens.
Early Learning (Ages 3-4)
Rooted in play, our preschool and pre-kindergarten programs incorporate a multi-cultural curriculum that introduces students to early literacy and numeracy while nurturing lifelong skills of sharing, persistence and creativity. Our early learning programs are designed to ensure a smooth transition into our kindergarten progressive education program.
Primary School (K-5)
In grades K-5, students are in multi-age classrooms to meet social as well as academic needs. Marylhurst emphasizes hands-on learning based on current understandings of how children’s brains work. Broad units of study offer oppor-tunities for exploration of literature, art, science, history, and music relating to them.
Middle School (6-8)
The Marylhurst middle school program provides children time to grow up, space to play, and rigorous inquiry-based instruction that challenges each student intellectually and socially. The curriculum builds on the progressive practice established in our primary school program: year long thematic studies, student directed learning and mentor-apprentice relationships which provide opportunities for leadership and growth.
