Zupan's Markets Celebrates 50 Years of Community, Taste, and Tradition

See why shopping at this locally owned gourmet grocer makes you feel like family.

On the shelves at Zupan’s Markets, you’ll find plenty of items that took time to reach their prime, like the Parmigiano Reggiano, aged for 24 months, or the diverse selection of fine wines from vintages long ago. So, next time you’re perusing the aisles, spend a moment or two to fully appreciate the longevity of a celebrated grocer with loyal clientele that has been serving the Portland area for 50 years.

Like the best produce, this story is all about being local. Founder John Zupan got his start in the grocery industry as a courtesy clerk at Portland’s Sheridan Fruit Co., then continued to develop his craft for years at Fred Meyer, before finally starting his own business in 1975.

Today, his son Mike Zupan — who worked in the family’s stores as a kid — runs the company with the same passion and dedication to quality ingredients and service that his father did, while also evolving it into a destination where customers can source high-end ingredients and recreate restaurant-caliber meals in their own kitchens.

“For 50 years, Zupan’s Markets has been more than just a place to shop — it’s been part of the community fabric of our neighborhoods,” said Mike Zupan, president and CEO of Zupan’s Markets.

“We’re proud of our family’s legacy and deeply grateful for the customers, associates, and partners who’ve supported us over the years. This milestone is as much theirs to celebrate as it is ours.”

In honor of this golden anniversary, Zupan’s Markets is hosting exclusive events, promotions, and product releases throughout 2025. Here’s a little taste of what’s happening.

  • 5 on the 5th, a selection of five not-to-miss deals available on the fifth of every month. Featuring special pricing on classic grocery staples, local seasonal favorites, and homemade specialties; sign up for the email list to get notified about them.
  • An exclusive 50th anniversary EVOO, crafted with Durant Olive Mill and packaged in an elegant, commemorative bottle. It carries a subtle sweetness and peppery finish and is available now for a limited time.
  • The Z Cookie, a customer favorite, coming soon in two new scrumptious forms: a take-and-bake pack for you to make warm, oven-fresh cookies at home, and a Z Cookie ice cream featuring the Belgian chocolate chip cookie crumble swirled in sweet cream.

  • “BubbleZ,” a festive holiday tasting of Champagne and sparkling wines in November at both their Burnside and Lake Oswego stores.

That’s not nearly the end of the list of things to love about Zupan’s Markets — trust us, it’s more than 50 reasons long — but here are a few more to get you started. Hopefully you saved enough room in your cart.

Eat Well. Love Your Food. Put Taste First.

These three phrases are the guiding principles for the products that Zupan’s Markets proudly offers its loyal customers.

From their signature items like Dungeness crab cakes and Kurobuta pork to their housemade favorites like guacamole and fresh-squeezed orange juice, you can truly appreciate the thoughtful curation behind every taste.

Big Dinners in the Breezeway

Since the opening of the Lake Oswego location in 2012, the light and airy space has served as a summertime gathering place for friends, longtime and brand new, brought together over a four-course, al fresco meal.

Shop & Sip

Zupan’s Markets was the first in the region to employ a dedicated wine steward in 1991, and sourcing wines from around the world has been central to the store’s success ever since.

It makes perfect sense that you’re able to enjoy a glass as you look for a bottle to show off at your next soirée.

There are more than 1,000 to try, including Oregon pinots, California chardonnays, Italian Barolos, and other varieties from around the world, so be sure to savor the experience.

Full-Service Floral

Another way Zupan’s Markets blossomed onto the scene was by introducing European-style floral displays, where customers can pick up colorful blooms on the way to check out.

Today, their team of flower experts puts together hand-tied bouquets and other beautifully crafted arrangements; they’re also available to collaborate with you on a unique design to fit your special occasion.

Waste Not

Why not? When you shop at Zupan’s Markets, you never have to wonder, “what will happen to any produce that’s not purchased?” When items go beyond the point that they’d be sold in store but are still safe for immediate consumption, they’re donated to Urban Gleaners, a local nonprofit that collects delicious, fresh food and gets it to the people who need it. Zupan’s Markets has also fought food insecurity by partnering with Sunshine Division for 30 years.
