Menomena’s "Fashionable" Video

Over the top, locally designed costumes, take the cake in this Pdx music video.

In the old marriage of music and fashion, the child would be the music video. Watching Madonna’s Vogue, Bell Bi DeVoe’s Poison and Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love shaped my fashion sensibility more than I should ever dare to admit aloud. That’s why when I was asked to participate in Menomena’s new music video (directed by Alicia J. Rose) as an 80’s female wrestler I jumped at the chance. I mean, I got to have a glitter star painted on my eye!

And though the music blogs will talk about all the other music related cameo’s (Loch Lomond, Helio Sequence, etc.) in total Portland style fashion rears its head in all places with snippets of yours truly, my model and photographer twin, Ashley Anthony, owner of Xtabay Vintage, Liz Gross cheers on from the ringside and designer Emily Katz gets to turn down the male lead in the opening scene.

The Pièce de résistance to the video has to be the costumes. What fun would wrestling be without spandex? I badgered the costumer designer, Jayme Hansen, from Bent Image Lab about her role.

Q. What was the inspiration for the women’s wrestling outfits?

A. I was inspired by 1980’s-1990’s pro wrestling, the movie The Wrestler, vintage high school wrestling singlets, Lucha Libre, David Bowie, and fashion designer Pam Hogg.

Q. How many of those did you sew yourself?

A. I sewed every wrestling costume by myself.

Q. What was the hardest part about styling so many pieces?

A. The hardest part about working on this video was finding enough time to do it all. Because of my experience with doing costumes for Fleshtone all those years, I’m used to pumping out multiples of crazy stage wear. But I have to admit: on this job, the glue gun did make an appearance at the last second. Shhh.

Q. Do you want to go work for WWE now?

A. I would absolutely design wrestling gear for the WWE. It would be fun to femme out some of those muscles.

I suppose it will just be a matter of days now before Lady Gaga needs me on set to star in her next creation. Never fret, I’ll be sure to blog about it.
