Portland is the Next LA?

This week mega LA retailer Kitson opens up shop in town rounding out a year of big fashion names setting up right here.

Kitson Portland.

It’s obvious Portland has slowly permeated the mainstream conscious as the countrywide fans of Portlandia grow and The New York Times continues to makes us blush, but have we gone so far to be the next LA?

Iconic LA lifestyle boutique, Kitson–known perhaps best for its constant paparazzi presence and celeb culture paraphernalia like Team Aniston T-shirts–opened its first shop outside the LA area this week in Pioneer Place mall.

The surprising move is a 4,000 square foot concept location on the lower level with top brands in each of the store’s categories: men’s, women’s and kids’ accessories, gifts, books and novelties including exclusives from Homies, Boy London, Yosi Samra, and Lauren Moshi. The 13-year-old company is particularly known for suiting those with “irreverent tastes” (that might make the most sense for them to now call Portland home).

Kitson executives say they, "decided the time was right for the Pioneer Place location due to the center’s ongoing transformation and the incorporation of the designer shopping experience, believing it to echo Kitson’s own aesthetic of blending luxury goods with kitsch and fashion with fun."

The addition of Kitson marks the end of a year of impressive additions for Pioneer Place as the powers that be there have managed to bring in some big names in the last few months with the additions of Tory Burch and Michael Kors. And over in the Brewery Blocks, California based knitwear company Splendid opened their first Pdx shop while (according to job postings online tipping us off) the Brewery Blocks is also about to open our first Madewell with their chic clothes in an American dry goods vibe.

All these major companies targeting us in one year begs the question: Portland, did we become fancy?
