The popular Portland Flea series of Sunday markets attracts vendors and lovers of vintage and antiques. But when founder Kate Sullivan saw more vendors coming in with fresh takes on pottery and textiles, she thought the traditional flea market model might need rejuvenation.

In April, she began to trade emails with Alex Bellos, vice president of marketing at the serendipitously named retailer of salvage, vintage, and craft goods Rejuvenation. Sullivan and Bellos convinced 20 local craftspeople (and three food carts) to set up shop June 29 for the debut of a collaborative Sunday Emporium. Vendors will take over the 38,000 square feet of Rejuvenation’s historic two-story Neustadter Building on the corner of SE Grand Avenue and Taylor. Some highlights will include Caravan Pacific’s lights (left), Revolution Design House’s asymmetrical wood plant pots (below), and The Good Mod’s midcentury tables and benches. The back parking lot will host food trucks Sweetheart Bakery, Taco Peddler, and Kuza Burger.  

Unlike a flea, the emporium Bellos and Sullivan created meshes old and new, vintage finds and cutting-edge craftsmanship. Whenever they were built, Sullivan says, all the items are made to last.

Bellos says such a confluence makes sense in Portland, a hub for local craft and design. He says, “It’s a close-knit, supportive maker community.”
