For the lucky-number-seven installment of The Hollywood Theater’s Fashion in Film series (curated by me and Portland Mercury’s fashion columnist Marjorie Skinner), we’re going period film. Specifically, we’re clapping our hands over corsets and monocles in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
The year was 1992 and the cast assembled is arguably the best of its time. Gary Oldman playing a shape-shifting terrifying vampire/wolf creature/best dressed guy at a Steampunk convention? Yes! Winona Ryder—aka Goddess of the early 90s—in her most velvet-swathed, delicate state? You know it! Everyone else you ever wanted to see, including Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes, Monica Bellucci, and Tom Freaking Waits? They’re all here!
The full two-hour film stays true to the novel—no sparkling millennial here—in gorgeous castles with romantic updos, perfectly tailored suits, and pale skin as far as the eye can see. This one is worth seeing on the big screen again.
