Can You Smoke Shrooms? No. But You Can Vape Certain Kinds

Can You Smoke Psilocybin Mushrooms?

Smoking Psilocybin Mushrooms: A Dangerous Misstep

In spite of all the Panic shows I attended in my twenties (my ex was a big Spread Head), I personally have never seen anyone smoking shrooms.

And it would be highly idiotic to do so: Psilocybin isn’t like a cannabinoid; heating it does nothing other than degrade its integrity.

Plus, you’d be exposing yourself to fungal infections that could potentially be difficult to treat.

Why Smoking Shrooms Doesn’t Work

I would think that lighting up your shrooms would be detrimental to the psychedelic experience as well, possibly rendering the psilocybin ineffective.

The bottom line is that smoking psilocybin mushrooms isn’t safe, nor is it going to enhance the psychedelic experience in any way. If anything, it will rob you of the intended outcome.

The Alternative: Vaping Magic Mushroom Extracts

The Rise of Legal Magic Mushroom Extracts

But while you can’t smoke psilocybin mushrooms and trip out, you can vape certain extracts of 100% legal magic mushrooms both safely and pleasurably.

The term ‘magic mushrooms’ for decades referred exclusively to psilocybin shrooms, which are federally illegal according to the Controlled Substances Act.

However, in recent years the magic-mushroom moniker has extended its definition to include other types of legal mushrooms that have a psychedelic, or at the least, nootropic effect.

Popular Legal Magic Mushrooms for Vaping

  • Lion’s Mane

One of these nootropic, legal mushrooms is Lion’s Mane. When combined with a few other natural ingredients, you can vape Lion’s Mane and definitely feel the trippiness.

  • Amanita Muscaria

Another popular, legal magic mushroom is the amanita muscaria species. Like Lion’s Mane, amanita mushroom extracts are blended with a carrier oil and other natural ingredients and vaped for a blast-off that can rival psilocybin, albeit the effects don’t last as long as eating shrooms.

The Importance of Product Safety When Vaping Magic Mushrooms

The Diamond Shruumz Recall

Although vaping magic mushrooms is a fast-acting, legal way to enjoy the psychedelic effects of fungi, you have to be careful where you’re getting your product from.

Just this year, there was a huge recall of a brand called Diamond Shruumz that, it turns out, was using a synthetic form of psilocybin in their magic mushroom products that they weren’t disclosing on the labeling.

The Danger of Synthetic Psilocybin: 4-AcO-DMT

Specifically, this lab-made compound is called 4-AcO-DMT, and the FDA believes this is what made so many people get sick from the Diamond Shruumz products. Symptoms included uncontrollable vomiting and seizures (yikes).

The Role of Lab Testing in Avoiding Risks

The brand had been lagging on their third-party testing for at least a year, failing to post any new lab results for consumers to verify before purchasing.

Personally, I think a lot of people could have avoided their unfortunate experience had they just checked the lab reports page on the website and decided to pass based on this glaring lack of transparency.

When it comes to unregulated supplements, especially nootropics or psychedelics, I can’t stress enough how important it is to vet brands and scrutinize lab tests before you buy.

Final Thoughts: Smoking vs. Vaping Magic Mushrooms

Smoking Psilocybin Mushrooms: Not Worth the Risk

Bottom line: No, you cannot smoke traditional magic mushrooms, aka psilocybin shrooms, without compromising the effects of psilocybin as well as your health.

Vaping Magic Mushrooms: A Safer Alternative

However, to get fast-acting psychedelic action from the mushroom kingdom, you can vape certain legal magic mushroom extracts, including Lion’s Mane and amanita muscaria. These are blended with other natural ingredients and promote a nootropic, psychedelic effect.

Choose Reputable Suppliers for Safety

Just make sure you purchase magic mushroom vapes from a reputable supplier that provides current third-party lab reports to avoid a situation like the Diamond Shruumz recall.
