I don’t know about you, but the abundance dark clouds and bursts of showers lately have me dreaming of holing up in a movie theater for a few hours. Happy coincidence then that I noticed that the new documentary 180° South is opening in Portland next week.

Directed by big-wave surfer and Patagonia adventure spokesman, Chris Malloy, the film retraces the path of an inspirational 5,000-mile road trip from Southern California to South American undertaken by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard back in 1968 in which he surfed and skied all the way down the Pan American Highway on his way to climb Mt Fitzroy.

For the redux, the crusty Chouinard, now pushing 70, is back in action along with a merry band of world-class surfers and climbers like Jeff Johnson, Keith Malloy, and Timmy O’Neil in tow. Only this time, they’re going by boat.

Toss in a soundtrack which includes tunes from Shin’s frontman James Mercer, Mason Jennings, and the reigning Grand Poobah of surf-inspired chords, Jack Johnson and boom, you’ve got a good excuse to come inside, at least until the weather clears up.

The film opens next Wednesday at the Hollywood Theater (with special guests to be announced) and runs through June 1.
