Rapha’s Flying Colors

By Zach Dundas October 11, 2010 Published in the November 2010 issue of Portland Monthly

The grimy glory of cyclocross gets the Easter-egg treatment this fall, as Rapha North America, the North Portland–based offshoot of the stylish British cycling outfitter, debuts its new pro team in unmistakable uniforms designed by James Selman of Portland’s Weights&Pulleys. Selman will dress top American riders Chris Jones and Zach McDonald in vertical color bands inspired by vintage ’70s and ’80s cycling kits, with Rapha’s signature pink playing off the red of bike maker (and co-sponsor) Focus. A “Belgian blue” pays tribute to the rugged off-road discipline’s roots in that muddy, beer-loving Low Country. “’Cross is known for mud and rain, so we thought we’d give it some candy,” says Rapha’s Slate Olson. Team Rapha-Focus plans to compete in Portland International Raceway’s US Gran Prix on Dec 4 and 5 and in the US Nationals in Bend, Dec 8–12.
