9 U-Cut Christmas Tree Farms within 90 Minutes of Portland

Sweet coniferous Christmas, it's already time to get the tree up! Luckily for Oregonians, perfectly pruned and shaped holiday Noble firs (and Nordmanns, and Dougs, and Grands) literally grow all around us. As the nation's leading producer of Christmas trees, it's true that around 90 percent of our conifers are destined for sale outside the state. But don't worry—plenty stay here at home, and they're often considerably cheaper here than those that end up in, say, Arizona. Celebrate by making an event of it: rather than heading to a grocery store lot for a pre-cut tree, channel your inner lumberjack at these nine nearby U-cut farms.
30 Minutes from Downtown Portland:
For Grimm groupies:
Furrow Farm
Nov 24–Dec 24; Mon–Fri 10 a.m.–dark, weekends 9 a.m.–dark
25877 NW West Union Rd, Hillsboro
Trees: $7 per foot up to 15 feet (Douglas Fir only $4 a foot)
Furrow Farm's trees have been featured in multiple Christmas episodes of the locally-filmed sci-fi/police procedural.
For hikers:
Quail Creek Ranch
Dec 9–24; weekends 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
9949 NW Kaiser Rd, Portland
Quail Creek Falls is a short hike from the 20-acre farm; cozy up afterwards with hot cider or cocoa at the farm's warming hut before committing yourself to a tree.
For would-be farm kids:
Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm
Nov 24–Dec 10; Fri–Sun 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
12814 NW Bishop Rd, Hillsboro
Trees: $52 for all U-Cut trees except for Douglas Firs ($25)
Make a day of it at Helvetia Christmas Tree Farm, which boasts an open fire pit with free marshmallows, artificial snow every five minutes, and a Santa Claus. Your kids might also dig the farm's model train display or visits with its farm animals.
One Hour from Downtown Portland:
For the chemical- and scent-sensitive:
Sunny Day Tree Farm
Nov 18–Dec 22; Tue–Thu 10 a.m.–5 p.m., weekends 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
25100 SW Neill Rd, Sherwood
Trees: $50 for U-Cut and $55 for pre-cut
Looking for a pesticide-free tree? That’s all Sunny Day sells, but what they don’t sell are Noble Firs. You can still get an attractive Turkish Fir or a low-fragrance Nordmann, perfect for the allergy-prone, plus seasonal decorations. (Reindeer made from logs? Check.)
For fans of nativity scenes:
Thornton's Treeland
Nov 24–Dec 24; daily 9 a.m.–dark
7617 NE 119th St, Vancouver
Alongside the nativity scene at Thornton’s Treeland (in the barn, naturally), find handmade Christmas décor and gifts. Outside, catch an old-fashioned hayride before making your tree choice.
For members of the military:
Hagg's Farm
Nov 24–Dec 24; Mon–Fri 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat–Sun 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
18175 SW McCormick Hill Rd, Hillsboro

For fans of Rudolph:
Loch Lolly Christmas Forest
Nov 24–Dec 20; daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
28366 NW Dorland Rd, North Plains
