Taste Wine in English and Spanish at Celebrating Hispanic Roots

The month-long event featuring Hispanic winery owners and winemakers includes a bilingual wine tasting on October 3.

The winery owners and winemakers of Celebrating Hispanic Roots


Starting September 15, Celebrating Hispanic Roots—a month-long celebration of self-identifying Hispanic winery owners and winemakers in the Willamette Valley that coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month—will return for its second year.

Many of the winery owners and winemakers from last year’s event are coming back this year, and the featured event on October 3 is an in-person wine tasting conducted in English and Spanish. A portion of proceeds from the wine tasting and wine sales will support Adelante Mujeres, which provides education and leadership training for Latina women in Oregon.

The returning participants include event founder Ximena Orrego, co-owner of Atticus Wine; Carla Rodríguez, co-owner of Beacon Hill Winery and leader of this year's event; Sofia Torres-McKay, co-owner of Cramoisi Vineyard; Sam Parra of Parra Wine Company; and JP Valot, owner of Valcan Cellars. New to the roster this year are Oregon-born siblings Elena and Leo Rodriguez, who own Alumbra Cellars, where they make wine using the grapes from a vineyard that their father, an immigrant from Durango, Mexico, planted himself.

From September 15 through October 15, each winemaker will be offering special packages of wine bottles, with plenty of pinot noirs from all the winemakers, Parra's Tempranillo, and Valot's award-winning white Malbec; they’ll donate 10% of those proceeds to Adelante Mujeres. October 3’s wine tasting, meanwhile, will take place at Beacon Hill Winery, with tastes from all six wineries, plus bites to accompany the wine.
