SUMMER GUIDE

Play Like a Kid this Summer

Yeah, yeah, yeah. “Keep Portland Weird.” We know. (Here’s how.)

World Naked Bike Ride • June 8

THE PITCH
A nighttime cycle through Portland as nature intended

DO
Bring clothes, plus bike tools and a helmet. You’ll want them at some point. Trust us.

DON’T
Go completely naked if you’re not comfortable ending up on a friend’s—or stranger’s—Facebook page (or with your boss potentially seeing you).

BEST BETS
The Naked Ride is only one of many rides during Pedalpalooza—and the only one that encourages nudity. Check out the others at shift2bikes.org.

The Big Float • July 28

THE PITCH
More than 2,000 costumed crazies tubing, rafting, and doggie-paddling down the Willamette for no other reason than because they can

DO
Forget what your mother told you! The Willamette is safe for swimming—at least according to “officials.”

DON’T
Leave your life vest at home. You won’t be able to float without one.

BEST BETS
Stay for the beach party—three bands, food carts, and beer.

Adult Soapbox Derby • Aug 17

THE PITCH
Style trumps speed at this wild race down the curving roads of Mount Tabor in handmade vehicles.

DO
Bring a camera. You won’t want to miss snapping a photo of the bathtub filled with three bearded men barreling past you.

DON’T
Forget the picnic. The deadline for entering your own dubious craft passed in April, so crack a beer and settle in for the entertainment.

BEST BETS
Go for the straight sections if speed’s your thing, but head for the curves if you want to see driving talent.
