Sneak Peek: Blue Star Donuts
There's always room for more donuts. While Voodoo Doughnuts has the hipsters and tourists covered, until now, the high-falutin' foodie has been left to dream of sweet possibilities. In a pastry crazed town like Portland, it was only a matter of time before someone pounced on the idea of gourmet donuts. Leave it to visionary restaurateur Micah Camden, of Little Big Burger fame, to take the dough and raise it to new heights.
Blue Star Donuts (1237 SW Washington), Camden's latest culinary enterprise, is handing out one free donut per customer, today only, while they last. And though the menu on the wall hints at a garden of epicurean delights (Maple Glazed & Bacon, Conitreau Creme Brulee, Fried Chicken & Honey Butter) there are only four kinds available today. They open "for real" tomorrow at 7am. The shop is open M-F 7am-7pm and Sat-Sun 8am-7pm.
For today's noshing pleasure, Blue Star has Passion Fruit Poppyseed, Homemade Horchata Glazed, Blueberry, Bourbon, & Basil, and Coffee & Coconut Cheesecake. And lest you think we're talking about prosaic pastry here, it should be pointed out that head pastry chef Stephanie Donlan is using a brioche dough that makes for a lighter, chewier, and altogether more pillowy donut. I opted for the Blueberry, Bourbon, & Basil, and be advised that there is simply no way to eat this bad boy without giving yourself a delicious purple facial. The flavors are vivid and invigorating, and you'll most likely moan your approval. I snapped a few pictures to get your tummy tank a-rumbling. Make no mistake, these donuts are definitely game changers!
Update: As of 1:20, the free donuts are gone! Come back bright and early in the morning. You'll be glad you did.
