Taqueria Nueve Returns!

Chef Billy Schumaker will bring his beloved wild boar tacos, margaritas, and ceviche to the former Beaker and Flask space this November.

It's been over five years since chef Billy Schumaker closed his beloved NE 28th eatery Taqueria Nueve, one of the pioneering kitchens of Portland's new school of cooking that emerged in the early 2000s.

Five years, and the loss still stings for many lovers of the eclectic Mexican restaurant's wild boar tacos, octopus coctel, lime-doused ceviche, cochinita pibil, and uber-fresh margaritas.

Back in 2008—when the restaurant and its Pearl District sister space D.F. closed their doors—regulars yelled, bribed, and wept, but the recession necessitated the end of a tasty, tasty era. Like many outgoing restaurateurs, Schumaker shuttered with the promise: Taqueria Nueve would be back. Unlike many speakers of that fateful phrase, this chef is staying true to his word.

Eat Beat has learned that Schumaker and business partner Brent Richford will resurrect Taqueria Nueve in the former Beaker and Flask space at 727 SE Washington. "Our goal is to return one of Portland's most missed restaurants," says Schumaker, "while exceeding the food and service expectations that people once had."

The new menu will feature many of the classics that made the restaurant a hit—including those excellent wild boar tacos—while incorporating some of the standouts from D.F.'s cosmopolitan offerings. Above all, Schumaker promises continued commitment to sustainably sourced ingredients and fresh takes on regional flavors from Mexico.

An opening is set for November 2013, to allow time for Schumaker and Richford to transform the former craft cocktail bar into the bright, welcoming dining room so many have been missing all these years. Stay tuned for updates!
