OPENING WATCH

Inside Piglet, Pine Shed Ribs' New Bar and Dining Room

With new menu items and a rustic indoor counterpart to the barbecue haven's outdoor patio, Lake Oswego's favorite smoke-scented eatery is gearing up for a satisfying 2014.

Summer can wait, at least for fans of Lake Oswego's solid barbecue joint Pine Shed Ribs. Thanks to the debut of Piglet Pint & Pastry, the new bar, bakery counter, and dining room a few doors down from the Pine Shed's savory smokers and signature wooden take-out shack, some of the best BBQ in the metro area is now available for comfortable dine-in noshing year-round.

The just-opened bar and dining room is nestled in an unassuming Lake Oswego strip mall, but the interior is pure Portland: think wooden beams and wood-clad bar boasting reclaimed lumber from the Rebuilding Center, industrial lighting and barstools, and a cozy wood stove that keeps the space warm during even the nastiest of Oregon drizzles.

Piglet wakes up each weekday at 6 am as a commuter's pitstop for coffee, espresso, and pastries—think chocolate chip muffins, peanut butter banana bread pudding, scones stuffed with marionberry jam, and fresh cinnamon rolls pulled hot out of the open bakery kitchen at the back of the room throughout the morning.

Come lunchtime, the space rolls out its full barbecue menu, loaded with familiar favorites like pitmaster Matt Ramey's spiced pork and beef ribs, house brisket and pastrami, pulled pork sandwiches and chicken glazed in the 'cue joint's signature sauce.

Starting at 4 pm daily, locals gather for happy hour and dinner with pints of local beers on tap, affordable plates piled high with meat, desserts (chocolate cake to cobbler a la mode), and a new menu of pub-style dishes like pretzel-wrapped sauces, smoked chicken wings, and fondue—complete with house-smoked charcuterie for dipping.

The indoor space may not have the irresistible July-and-August vibe of Pine Shed's outdoor open marshmallow pits, strings of twinkling lights, and free-range dogs, but there's still plenty to love—no waterproof jackets required.
