'Tis the Season for Strawberry Ice Cream

Strawberries seem to be the favorite berry among local scoop shops, so grab a cone and see how these ice cream gurus are getting fresh with summer flavors.

Throughout the month of July, every seasonal Salt and Straw flavor is an homage to the Oregon berry. The standout of the month's offerings?  Strawberry with cilantro lime cheesecake, featuring strawberries from South Barlow farms in Canby, Oregon that are picked, delivered, and tossed into this dreamy ice cream within the same day. Perpetually raising the bar for ice-cream flavors (as per usual), Salt & Straw blazes a new trail through the typical strawberry fields with swirls of cilantro lime cheesecake, adding zing, brightness, and textural contrast to the entire experience.

Get it before it's gone: 3345 SE Division, 2035 NE Alberta St, 838 NW 23rd Ave. Open 11am-11pm daily.

For another unconventional take on strawberry ice cream, head to North Portland's liquid nitrogen-powered What’s The Scoop and check out their “Sizzling Strawberry,” loaded with fresh strawberry puree and ribbons of local jam-makers Rose City Pepperheads’ “Sizzling Strawberry” jam.

Scoop PDX is getting into the strawberry ice cream game with a classically creamy strawberry ice cream and a strawberry balsamic sorbet. Find them both at the "a la carts" food pavilion at 4926 SE Division St (Tues-Sat 12-8 pm), the North Station Food Cart Pod inside Handsome Pizza at 2730 N Killingsworth (Sun-Mon 1-8 pm, Tues-Sa 12-9 pm), AND THE Rose City Food Park ON NE Sandy between 52nd and 53rd (Mon 4 -7 pm, Tues-Sat 12-7 pm, Sun 1-5 pm).

Ruby Jewel offers both an Oregon Strawberry and Strawberry basil flavor, which can be found at both of their scoop shops, at 3713 N. Mississippi Avenue and 428 SW 12th Avenue, both open 12-11 pm daily.

You can also bring home the berries with a carton of Oregon Strawberry ice cream from Tillamook, or grab one of the last pints from the farmers market before the season winds down and make your own at home. We've got word that more summer seasonal sweets are on their way at all Portland scoop shops, from peach leaf concoctions to watermelon sorbets. Stay tuned!
