Palace Cakes Now Open Downtown

The hotly anticipated cake shop from Two Tarts Bakery owner Elizabeth Beekley has opened its doors.  As Eat Beat reported earlier this year, Palace Cakes has grown from a take-out operation to a full-blown brick and mortar on 1401 SW Yamhill with cake by the slice, pick-your-own buttercreams, and a selection of Beekley’s killer ice creams.

The 748-square foot storefront is lined with vintage bakeware and antique tchotchkes from the 1940’s, when Beekley’s grandmother ran the original Palace bakery in Walla Walla, Wa. Inside, you’ll find robin’s egg blue walls, seating for 10, and a huge display case filled with petit, regal “Bucky Cakes.”

Beekley’s cakes are steeped in the same old-school sensibilities: good ingredients and seasonal fruit just like her grandmother baked them—no fondant or food coloring, ever. Ten to twelve options spin out daily, each four stacks high, from mocha buttercream dark “Chocolate Joe” cake to  a toasted coconut with blackberry buttercream.

Right now, Palace is one of the only places in town to get a good slice of cake on the fly—or a full blown, all-natural wedding cake for that matter. Hear that Portland? No more Costco cake. We’re in the big leagues now.
