Summer revelers now have a new spot to drink in the sun and take in views of the Portland skyline. On July 29, the Sunset Room, a brand-new fourth-floor rooftop bar above Kex Hotel, opened its doors. And behind it is one of Portland’s biggest bar industry names: Jeffrey Morgenthaler.

The patio bar, which can accommodate 32 seated guests, will specialize in boozy slushies, chilled wine and beer, and playful cocktails. The menu is completely different from Pacific Standard, the bar that Morgenthaler and his team opened about a month ago in the Kex lobby. While Pacific Standard mostly sticks with the classics—look for Bloody Marys, espresso martinis, and takes on the gin fizz and negroni—the Sunset Room’s menu promises to lean more free-form: Stay tuned for further menu details.

“Upstairs at the Sunset Room, we’re more free to explore fun concoctions and throw a big outdoor party every night,” said Morgenthaler in a press release.

The new bar replaces the short-lived Lady of the Mountain bar, which opened in August 2020.
