At first glance, Kiva looks more or less like any other health-conscious café. Visitors to the Northwest Portland business are greeted with a display of gluten-free and vegan pastries, several pages of tea options, and a mostly vegetarian menu of superfood smoothies, granola bowls, kale salads, and miso soup. Keep walking to the back of the shop, however, and you’ll find a hidden gem: the “spa” part of Kiva Café & Spa. There, well out of sight of chatty tea-sippers, patrons enjoy luxurious foot scrubs, aromatic “back facials,” and relaxing Ayurvedic massages complete with warm oil scalp treatments and a liberal use of calming essential oils. It’s dark; it’s quiet; it’s mostly empty; it’s exactly what most of us need to finally chill the heck out.

If you’ve never been to Kiva, now's your chance to check it out: the locally-owned business celebrates its fourth anniversary with an internationally-inspired open house. On Saturday, November 19, from 2–4 p.m., the café will come alive with belly dancers, henna artists, live music, and raffle prizes like spa foot baths and facials. Oh, and did we mention the free stuff? Attendees can take advantage of complementary 10–minute massages, samples of Kiva’s food and drink menu, and treats by local artisans like Fire Brew, Mazuba Matcha, Fleur de Lis Bakery, and Nossa Familia.

Can’t make the party? You’re in luck: all body treatments (and gift certificates!) are 15 percent off through November. Dedicated Kiva patrons can also sign up for a 12–month spa membership ranging from the $40-per-month “Sanctuary” package (which includes a spa foot bath, tea, and pastry) to “The Works,” which includes a footbath, lunch, massage or facial, tea for two, and other seasonal perks for $180-per-month. And of course, there’s always the café menu to explore—current seasonal specials include a turmeric ginger chai and a winter acai bowl topped with almond butter and dried cranberries. Regardless of which path you choose, don’t forget to treat yourself this winter. We're sure you deserve it.
