Property Watch: Own a Treehouse Hotel in Southern Oregon

The Excalifir is two stories tall, has a catwalk to a private balcony, and sleeps six.

Last week, we toured a midcentury home that had major treehouse vibes. This week, it’s the real thing. Actually, four of the real thing, comprising a unique bed and breakfast operation on almost 23 acres of woods in the Southern Oregon town of Cave Junction. The property includes a 2,821-square-foot main house, landscaped grounds and pool, additional guesthouse with a bathroom, three-stall barn and corral, and, of course, the four custom treehouses that have been used for short-term rentals. (Summer rates range from $270 to $380 per night for two people.)

The resort, called Vertical Horizons Treehouse Paradise, opened in 2004 and is now listed for $1,917,000. The main house was built in 1975, with wood siding and red trim accents that are charming throwbacks to its original era. Inside, there are three bedrooms, two of which are en suites, an array of living spaces with multiple fireplaces, and a hardworking kitchen suitable for hosting guests and small events.

The Tudor-inflected Calypso sleeps two.

While the main house sits in a clearing—complete with a pool, guesthouse, barn, and other farm outbuildings—the four treehouses are tucked up into the forest. All have running water, electricity, and plumbing for half-baths (there’s an additional shower house nearby), but no kitchens, as cooking beyond a hot pot isn’t permitted.

The treehouses come in various sizes and styles. There’s a petite “cottage” with angled windows following the peak of the roof, a mini Tudor-inflected one with a turret, and the grand, two-story Excalifir, which sleeps six and has a catwalk to a private balcony. (Cave Junction, curiously, is something of a treehouse hotel hot spot in Oregon; a “treesort” called Out ‘N’ About boasts more than a dozen perches, and has a somewhat more ramshackle vibe than Vertical Horizons.)

An array of handcrafted details further distinguishes each from the next, including stained glass, railings made of tree limbs, and sink pedestals carved from gnarled tree trunks. Our favorite feature, of course, is how two of the houses have live trees rising through the middle—a nice reminder of the uniqueness of the setting. And not to worry: the sellers report that beetle repellent has kept the host trees good and healthy.
