Property Watch: That Viral Spanish-Style Stucco House in Woodstock
This house doesn’t give much away from the curb, sitting on its quiet corner of the Woodstock neighborhood. But, hidden behind a hedge, its arched wood front door—tucked into a double-arched stucco alcove and decorated with fanciful floral ironwork—hints at what’s inside: more arched doors, carved wood beams, shimmering tile, and a semicircle staircase unlike any we’ve seen in the city. No wonder this Spanish-style charmer went viral last weekend, on both social media and in real life—650 people showed up to its open house.
The home was built in 1928, at the height of the city’s fervor for Spanish Revival architecture, as revealed immediately in the main room, which combines living and dining. There, find warm wood floors, thickly plastered walls, and a ceiling crisscrossed with dark beams, many capped with bespoke carvings. The focal point, though, is the wood-burning fireplace tucked into the sculptural sweep of a staircase, complete with a fan-shaped spread of tile at the hearth and metal hood. (Per the realtor, in case anyone is curious, the fireplace vents “under the stairs and up the wall behind it.”)
More craft awaits through an arched door and down a step into the kitchen. Inset cabinet doors are gently rounded to match the arch motif throughout, as are the scalloped shelves separating the cooking area from the adjacent dining nook. An accent wall covered in gleaming copper tile picks up the light from the windows and looks right at home with the red countertops and rust-colored floors. The refrigerator—a hot topic online—is cleverly set into an alcove and out of sight from certain angles.
With 1,480 square feet across two floors, this is a generous layout for a century-old bungalow, and it even has a bathroom on both floors. On the main floor, it’s a powder room with pretty sky-blue floor tile, while the upstairs full bath, also tiled, is shared by both bedrooms. Much of the historic detail continues up here, like the wood floors and crystal doorknobs, as well as the ceiling beams.
As if the house’s overflowing charm wasn’t enough, it also sits on a large, grassy corner lot and comes with an oversized, attached garage, accessed through the kitchen. The garage would make for a great studio or shop space, perfect for any new owners that may want to add a few artful touches of their own.
