Property Watch: 1980s Northwest Contemporary on 10 Acres in Mosier

Approaching this Mosier home from the driveway, nothing about it says traditional. In fact, the front facade, with its sweeping, angled rooflines on either side that come to a peak over a stack of windows, reads more like an observatory than an ordinary house. This is even more apparent at the back, which has more angular geometry, including intersecting roofs at each level and a top-floor window seemingly made for stargazing. (It is, in fact, a bedroom.)
Built in 1988 and designed by Portland architect Jerry L. Ward, the home checks a lot of boxes for a Pacific Northwest Contemporary. There's the flowing indoor-outdoor connection via all the big windows, as well as its integration with the Columbia Gorge landscape, thanks to a clear-grain, stained redwood covering the exterior that's finished in a traditional Japanese shou sugi ban style. The technique is good for fire resistance and durability, and it just looks good juxtaposed against the newly painted, punchy orange fascia boards and overhangs.

The updates continue inside, which has 3,947 square feet across three floors, and start with the custom fir and glass entry door. The main floor is the biggest, with a cluster of connected living spaces in one wing, including the dining room, living room, and a second family room. Throughout, find a bevy of natural materials, like solid fir floors, wood-lined, vaulted ceilings, and double-height stone at one fireplace. Rows of windows frame forest views, while a second fireplace occupies a cozy bricked alcove in the family room.

The refreshed kitchen reveals repainted cabinets, high-end appliances, and premium counters. There's also a connection to a fun solarium/hot tub room through sliding glass doors. These types of rooms were popular in passive solar design in the 1970s, and as here, were often combined with wellness features and used to grow plants. These days, it's a year-round retreat, making it possible to have a good soak in even the worst winter weather.

Down the hall, the second wing holds the primary suite, with a walk-in closet, remodeled bathroom with open shower, soaking tub, and heated tile floors, as well as its own fireplace by the bed. On the second floor, there's two more bedrooms, each with ascending views, a full bathroom, and a lofted bonus space overlooking the living room below. (That makes for three living areas, if you're counting.) The top floor is home to the stargazing bedroom, with a bonus capture of Mount Adams over the treetops.

Outside, a wraparound deck with built-in benches and planters is the perfect place to lounge. Add to that, a custom fire pit and a private trail system that leads deeper into the 10-acre forested lot, making this place much more grounded than it might have seemed at first glance.
