Before Portland’s favorite sultry songstress, Storm Large, relocated to Los Angeles to appear as a contestant on the CBS rock audition show Rock Star: Supernova, we asked her a few questions about rock camp.

If you had kids, would you encourage them to give rock camp a try?

The only way I could see doing that is if they had no interests and just wanted to sit around on their ass. But if you want it bad enough, if you feel that’s who you are, if everyone around you says you suck–but when you do it, you feel more like yourself than when you’re doing anything else–you do it.

Where did you learn to rock? Are you self-taught, or did you have years of training at a conservatory?

Bad childhood–and escapism. That’s what makes a pretty good rock musician. I’ve never gone to one of these band camp things, but I would imagine they’re very cool. The perception of being in a rock band has really changed over the years. You want to be in a rock band? Oh, you’re a dirtball, cut your hair, take typing classes. There was way more of a stigma attached to the idea. But now, it’s like you can actually have a shitload of money and there’s some respect given to it. I used to be called a dirtbag. And now everybody wants to kiss my ass.

But you know, we’ve had this national phenomenon of soccer moms? I think there’s going to be band camp moms–frustrated adults who never got to rock out because it was so stigmatized. And they’re going to push their little girls into it and the girls might just be like, I just want to have babies and be a fuckin’ wife.
