Andy Tibbetts first dreamed up the Clock Ship Tere while sitting in a tent at the 2004 Burning Man Festival. The 10,000-pound land-bound vessel, which features flame-flinging “sails” that produce a solid wall of fire 20 feet wide and 50 feet tall, took more than eight years to complete. Tibbetts has taken the C.S. Tere to the annual August rendezvous in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert three times, and says the craft will next appear at the 2015 event. The creator credits his love of mechanics to a childhood pastime. “As a kid I spent 30 hours a week playing with Legos,” he says. “The ship was a chance to make something I would have made then, but on a real-world scale.”
