We asked our readers to vote on how our city would operate as a sovereign nation. Here's what we found (all hail the barter economy!)

We asked our readers to vote on what Portland would look like as an independent country. Our religion would be atheism (Dudeism ranked a close second), we’d toss out capitalism for a barter economy, and our leader would be called Chieftain. Our greatest imports would be bikes and bacon, and we’d export hops and “ideas.” Our biggest enemy would (still?) be California, and sorry, Vancouver, WA, you’re not allowed to join. Traffic, potholes, and guns would be banned. Motto? “Keep Portland insane in the membrane!”
