On the list of personal matters people don’t much like talking about, urinary and fecal incontinence rank
near the top. But, says Dr. Melanie Crites-Bachert, “it’s important that people know there are non-medication options that really work.” Incontinence af icts tens of millions of Americans, she says, “but many people are too embarrassed to even talk about them.”

While bathroom issues can be a common side effect of aging, Dr. Crites-Bachert says you don’t have to live with them. She’s here to help.

During her urologic training, she discovered a knack for Interstim therapy, and she continues to achieve a 92 percent success rate, well above the national average of 71 percent. This involves precisely placing a thin wire in the low back to encourage appropriate bladder and bowel function.

Dr. Crites-Bachert, who came to Portland seven years ago, believes her treatment is especially valued in this region where an active, on-the-go lifestyle is the standard. She treats a wide range of other pelvic conditions, including pelvic organ prolapse, and always goes out of her way to make patients feel comfortable in discussing and addressing some of life’s most intimate concerns. “I give them options that work with their lifestyle,” she says.
