Buy One, Give One Program Aims to Blanket Portland

Zupan’s Markets & Sackcloth & Ashes partner to donate 1,000 blankets to Oregon shelters this holiday season.

Presented by Zupan's Markets November 30, 2020

Sackcloth & Ashes blankets are woven from a 100 percent recycled wool blend that is certifiably eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and good for the planet.

Bob Dalton can easily pinpoint the inspiration behind the company he founded in 2014: when his hardworking single mother found herself living on the streets. Since its inception, Salem-based Sackcloth & Ashes has made a mission of helping the homeless population, donating the blankets it crafts to those in need—and even taking the one-for-one business model to the next level by highlighting grassroots organizations that are creating solutions for helping the homeless throughout the country.

Now, Zupan’s Markets has partnered with Sackcloth & Ashes to “Blanket Portland,” donating 1,000 blankets to Oregon shelters. As part of Sackcloth & Ashes’ broader “Blanket the United States,” a pledge to donate one million blankets to those in need by 2024, the two Oregon-based businesses will give a blanket for every unit sold at one of the gourmet grocer’s three stores in Portland and Lake Oswego, in collaboration with Blanchet House and Mercy Teams.

Sackcloth & Ashes’ “Blanket the United States” program pledges to donate one million blankets to those in need by 2024.

“Since Zupan’s Markets was founded 45 years ago, we have held a deep belief in giving back to our community,” said Zupan’s Markets president and CEO, Mike Zupan. “Sackcloth & Ashes envisions its blankets not only as a practical need, but also as third-party objects that connect amazing people and organizations doing incredible work. This mission resonated strongly with our team, and we’re eager to work together to Blanket Portland this holiday season.”

For Sackcloth & Ashes, the sustainability of the blankets they produce is as important as the second blanket provided to those in need. Not only are they comfortable and durable, but they are woven from 100 percent recycled material, a wool blend that is certifiably eco-friendly, cruelty-free, and good for the planet. All Sackcloth & Ashes blankets are also produced dye-free, chemical-free, and water-free.

Zupan’s Markets will deliver reused blanket boxes filled by purchasers with hygienic products and other necessities to shelters alongside donated blankets.

As an extension of the partnership with Zupan’s, the Sackcloth & Ashes blankets are sold in a reusable box. Customers are asked to fill the box with hygienic products and other necessities. Upon the return of boxes to the store, Zupan’s Markets will donate these much-needed resources to shelters alongside the blankets.

“Zupan’s Markets is a great example of a company that is willing to step up and take responsibility for their own community,” said Dalton, now CEO of Sackcloth & Ashes. “Not only are they willing to be a part of the solution, but they are willing to support and highlight solutions.”

In addition to the Sackcloth & Ashes partnership, Zupan’s Markets for the 14th year is supporting the Sunshine Division, inviting customers to donate $20 at the register to purchase holiday food boxes for those in need. For more information, visit zupans.com.
