IN THE ERA of designer leggings and skinny jeans, it’s only natural that “jeggings”—the lexical aberration of the moment—would become the next evolutionary step in pants. A hybrid of jeans and leggings, jeggings began appearing on ultra-skinny starlets last spring, but the new generation of second-skin pants isn’t just the province of juniors departments or the cast of The Hills anymore. Luxurious updates in suede, leather, and corduroy offer a decidedly grown-up take on the trend, while the supple, stretchy fabric in most styles gets you the sprayed-on look, minus the muffin-top.
Dress them up with heels, tuck them into boots, or kick off your shoes and dip into downward dog—jeggings transition seamlessly from morning yoga to evening cocktails. The word might still be waiting its turn on the short list for the Oxford English Dictionary (right behind “staycation” and “unfriend”), but jeggings should definitely find their way into your style glossary this year.
