Behind an unremarkable Pearl District storefront wedged between a Greek restaurant and a gallery hides a glam grotto dripping with string-of pearl plants, seashell chandeliers, and ornate furniture. Even in a city packed with vintage shops, Trove Curated Home is unique in its wide range of rarities, as carefully arranged as a lush, botanical painting. It’s a home store that feels like a Gucci photo shoot—one you can actually afford.

Trove owes its quirky, opulent aura— dramatic floral wallpaper and marigold-hued, velvet tufted chairs to beaded Middle Eastern camel jewelry—to mother-daughter owners Debi and Chacha Sands. The spark started as a small vendor booth at a busy market in Houston circa 2004, where nurse anesthetist Debi, also an Air Force Reservist, sold the treasures she collected as a hobby. After both Sands moved to Portland—Debi in 2006, Chaca in ’08—the business popped up again as a tenant in the east side’s sprawling Grand Marketplace (now Urbanite) in 2014. In November 2017, Trove graduated to its own digs—the kind of spot where you can snag a 1920s cup set from India and fragrant green tea from Mizuba to sip from it.

Far from begrudging local competition, the Sands credit Portland’s thriving boutique culture for allowing them to transform from pop-up into a brick-and-mortar, and are now paying it forward by championing local makers. You’ll spy Portland jewelry line High Society Collection (with geometric earrings that double as roach clips in a pinch) nestled on an antique, Parisian-style bookcase next to an intricately painted ’70s-era Chinese urn.

Serial entrepreneur Chacha also runs her own creative firm, Crib Design House; hosts art therapy events; and publishes Beacon Quarterly, a magazine celebrating creatives from around the globe. She didn’t become a partner in Trove until her mother was deployed to Afghanistan in 2017 and Chacha took over day-to-day operations. Today, Crib styles shoots for Beacon, which in turn is sold at Trove, and the two share design and merchandising responsibilities—attention to each brand draws new eyes to all Sands projects.

In other words: they keep it in the family.
