A Sneak Peek at Portland's Next Hotel Boom

It's not (just) a façade: Portland's tourism market really is supercharged. Here are 10 hotel projects—some brand-new, some retooled—that will soon cash in on that demand.

Hi-Lo Hotel — 320 SW Stark St

OPENING: SUMMER 2016. Part of the Marriot family, this 120-room upscale boutique hotel in the historic Oregon Pioneer Building will—don’t worry!—still host Huber’s Café and its signature flaming Spanish coffee.

Harlow Hotel — 738 NW Glisan

OPENING: FALL 2016. Located on the North Park Blocks, the Harlow Block first served as a hotel back in 1882. It's scheduled to reincarnate this fall as a 25-room hotel with ground-floor retail and restaurant space.

Canopy by Hilton — NW Glisan and NW 9th Ave

OPENING: FALL 2016. This 153-room hotel located in the Pearl is affiliated with yet another Hilton brand, Canopy, which aims to incorporate "local culture" in every guest’s experience.

The Woodlark and Cornelius Building — Corner of SW Alder & SW Park

OPENING: 2017. These two historic buildings, both built in the 1900s, will be renovated into one 150-room "lifestyle" hotel operated by Provenance Hotel.

Grove Hotel — NW 4th Ave & Burnside St

OPENING: 2017. Originally constructed in 1904 in the heart of Old Town/Chinatown, this 28,000-square-foot building will be transformed into a 114-room boutique hotel aiming, developers say, to bring "sparkle" to this long-gritty corner of inner-west Burnside.

Porter Hotel — 1355 SW 2nd Ave

OPENING: LATE 2017. A planned part of Hilton's Curio Collection, this 299-room hotel in downtown Portland promises a basement level with a pool, sauna and spa. The 16-story hotel will also include a large, covered outdoor terrace.

Hotel Chamberlain — 509 SE Grand Avenue

OPENING: TBD. Beam Development and Urban Development will restore this historic Portland hotel built in 1897. The ground level, which, for over 50 years was housed by Shleifer Funiture, will also be renovated.

Pearl Hampton Inn & Suites — NW 9th & Everett

OPENING: TBD. A Wisconsin-based developer will design this 243-room mid-budget hotel, outfitted with two levels of integrated parking, a rooftop outdoor terrace, and commercial space.

Jupiter Hotel (expansion) — 800 E Burnside St

OPENING: TBD. Recently approved: a six-story, 67-room expansion for the currently-cramped Jupiter Hotel's rock-chic campus. Guest rooms will be located on the third through sixth floors, while the lower levels will be retail space. Next step: get those sexy building permits!

Oregon Convention Center Hotel — 777 NE MLK Jr. Blvd

OPENING: SUMMER 2019? Hoops have been jumped, budgets expanded, and ground said to be broken for this long-planned, massive 600-room Hyatt Regency, originally set to open in 2017. Already a year behind schedule, this destination is still barely a twinkle in Metro's eye.

You thought the Portland skyline couldn't possibly pack in any more condos, cranes, and high-rises? Bear witness to the storm about to hit: Portland's next big hotel boom. As the Portland Business Journal reports, tourists in Oregon spent a record-breaking $10.6 billion last year. In the Portland metro area, that meant 8.9 million overnight "person-trips" in 2015, according to Travel Portland. (Read: a lot of hotel bookings.) Many developers are betting—big time—that Portland stays popular, including the deep pockets behind the 10 hotel projects in this slideshow. Most are already being built (or expanded) at this very moment, with a few opening for business as early as this summer. So that dust over downtown? For some, this is how you make it rain.
