Laika's The Boxtrolls Premieres, And So Does A New Nike Boxtroll Shoe

David Pugh, one of 30 animators, works on a market scene. Each animator is responsible for some 20 frames per day, which works out to four to five seconds a week.
Laika’s long-awaited stop-motion feature, The Boxtrolls, hits nation-wide theatres tonight. The Oregon-based studio has been creating cutting-edge stop-motion animation for nearly a decade now, with two Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature in the last five years: 2009’s Caroline and 2012’s ParaNorman.
Laika's new film follows Eggs, an orphan boy raised by underground rubbish-hunting, cave-dwelling trolls, with voices by Ben Kingsley, Tracey Morgan, and more. In Portland Monthly’s September issue we looked behind the camera at the inner-workings of Laika’s Hillsboro studio and watched in awe as these brilliant animators and puppet designers crafted The Boxtrolls’ world.

Nike's "Trollstrikes" on set with The Boxtrolls.
In conjunction with the launch of The Boxtrolls, Laika has teamed up with a fellow Oregon-based brand for an unlikely collaboration: Trollstrikes, a Nike Roshe Run shoe that pulls inspiration straight from the film. The sneaker features burlap sides and a cobblestone-printed sole.
The Boxtrolls premiers in theatres across Portland tonight in standard and 3D. We've listed showtimes for the downtown theaters below, but it's playing across town, so check your nearest theater.
