The Eggs Benedict

It’s been three months since Lauretta Jean’s opened their second pie shop in the former Pix Patisserie space on Southeast Division. In addition to their expertly bronzed pies and masterful, all-butter crust quiches, the new outpost now dishes up one of Portland’s best brunches. Expect egg-driven classics galore, fortified with pastry-wiz Kate McMillen’s butter-craft and great cocktails to boot.

The small weekend brunch menu holds seasonal indulges, like piles of creamed kale mounded over fried eggs and thick crostini scattered with buttery pie crumbs, or biscuit sandwiches crammed with Brussels sprouts, egg, and melted jack cheese. The star of the show is a magnificent Eggs Benedict, perched on two crunchy, golden biscuits. It’s the classic Benny setup: quivering poached eggs, ample folds of smoked Otto’s ham, and a thick, lemony hollandaise all buttressed by heavenly, flaky pastry rounds.

Wash it all down with a dozen libations, ranging from a powerful Bloody Mary, thick with horseradish (a new contender for best in the city) to a hair of the dog Cat’s Pajama’s, with Campari, grapefruit, and a float of tequila and Prosecco. It’s at the top of our no-wait brunch list, and a new gem on Division’s budding Eat Street.
