By Gabriel Rucker, Andy Fortgang, and Lauren Fortgang
Thursday, September 19 at 7:30 pm, Powell's City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside St. in Portland
This debut cookbook from Portland’s own James Beard Award-winning chef Gabriel Rucker features 125 progressive-yet-playful recipes from his phenomenally popular East Burnside restaurant, Le Pigeon. The book brims with uncommon delicacies and envelope-pushing twists—Elk Tongue Stroganoff and Lamb Belly BLT, anyone?—and Le Pigeon’s Andrew and Lauren Fortgang contribute their expert wine recommendations and stellar dessert recipes, respectively.

Saturday, September 21 at 4 pm, Powell's City of Books, 1005 W. Burnside St. in Portland
Patrons of Portland’s Spanish-inspired Toro Bravo will cherish this book's 95 straight-from-the-restaurant recipes, from simple small plates to homemade chorizo. But like any good cookbook, “Toro Bravo” is more than a collection of recipes: it also explores the life story of Toro Bravo’s trailblazing chef John Gorham, recounting his grandfather’s crab-shack dance club, his influential trips to Spain, and his first forays into the restaurant business.

The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home doesn’t merely celebrate the new wave of artisan Jewish delis that have sprung up across the country; it provides the tools for any deli enthusiast to whip up crispy potato latkes, homemade pastrami, chocolate babka French toast, and everything in between. The book also features first-hand reports from modern Jewish eateries across America, including Portland’s own Kenny & Zuke’s Delicatessen.
By Nick Saul and Andrea Curtis
Monday, September 30 at 7:30 pm, Powell's on Hawthorne, 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland
When Nick Saul became executive director of The Stop in 1998, he transformed a cramped, dreary food bank into an internationally respected Community Food Center with gardens, a greenhouse, and a revolutionary mission. Now he’s co-written a book arguing for healthy food, strong communities, and political empowerment. This personal tale is sure to leave you politically inspired… and perhaps a bit hungry.
