5 Nights of Pizza on Southeast Division

Now boasting five pizza joints within five blocks, it’s safe to say that Portland's "Slice Street" has a pizza for every occasion.

1. Date Night: Pizza Maria

Certainly, the restaurant is intimate in almost every sense of the word. With just nine tables and a modest bar area, the place feels designed for the romantic outing. Food and drink menus are small and make the whole experience feel effortless—chef Sean Coyne and his team have done the guesswork for you. So relax, enjoy an Italian soda with house-made syrup (in flavors like rhubarb, rosemary, and thyme), and a couple of Coyne’s Neapolitan-style pizzas, made with locally-sourced ingredients and a naturally-leavened crust, and let the sparks fly.

Try this slice: Tomato, red onion, Olympic Provisions sausage, chili flakes, and Pecorino Romano.

2. Happy Hour with Friends: Cibo

Be sure to pencil in Cibo from 5-6 pm for your post-workday catch-up. Order a glass of wine or a cocktail and divvy up one of their $5 margherita pizzas (yes, $5) with a pair of good ol' kitchen shears. This might be the best pizza deal on Division—one is easily shared between 2 or even 3 (less hungry) comrades.

Try this slice: Happy hour is all about the margherita, but if you pop in for dinner, we love the Sopressata with salami, kalamata olives, red onions, and mozzarella.

3. See and Be Seen: Roman Candle

Tired of Neapolitan-style pies? Hit up Duane Sorenson’s chic Roman Candle Baking if you’re sick of circular pizzas. Here, the antidote comes in the form of rectangular slabs of toothy, Roman-style flatbread pizza. Order this hearty and refreshingly unique pizza for either lunch or dinner, by the slice ($5-7) or whole slab ($28-52). For dinner, round up a couple friends and grab a spot at one of the bakery-café’s four, long communal tables. Post-pizza, end the night with an affogato—a generous scoop of gelato bathed in a shot of Stumptown Hairbender espresso.

Try this slice: The blanca with mozzarella, ricotta, basil, pickled peppers—add prosciutto or a handful arugula for a few bucks more.

4. Dinner with the whole family: Atlas Pizza

Looking for a kid-friendly spot? Head to Atlas Pizza, the other new kid on the pizza block, where they’re serving up no-fuss pies that are sure to get thumbs up from youngsters (especially those with a tendency to turn up their noses at pies embellished with fresh basil, or anything green, for that matter). Order by the slice ($3.25-4) or whole pie ($14-24). Bonus: the pinball machines will win over patrons of all ages.

Try this slice: Atlas Pizza will also win over family crowds with their build-your-own option, meaning wholly customizable pies for picky palates. Also try the Sluzrenko: jalapeño, pepperoni, and pineapple.

5. Old School Dive: Eugenio's

Finally, for a slice of old Portland, head to Eugenio’s, which is a cross between an event space, café, sandwich shop, pizza parlor, and bar. It is certainly the most neighborhood-y of Division’s pizza joints and offers another unique riff on pizza. Here you’ll find a cracker-y thin crust that gets a hit of tang and salty flavor from the handful of fresh-grated Parmesan that gets sprinkled over the top and gives the edges a cheesy crunch. Despite the thinness of the crust, the pizza is filling and the toppings generous.

Try this slice: Torn between a love of the classic margherita but enticed by house creations (like Molinari pepperoni, chèvre, olives, and red onions)? You have option to order half of each at no additional cost.
