1. Sample some truly Tight Tacos
Parked on the corner of a mini-mart at Caesar Chavez and Southeast Yamhill is a new, white-washed taco cart slinging authentic house-spiced chorizo with fresh-pressed masa tortillas (which recently increased in price from $2 to $3 apiece). Reggie Ballesteros, a Hawaiian transplant who served under Top Chef finisher Lee Anne Wong, takes his no-frills tacos seriously, with bright salsas blended from a collection of chiles that line the cart’s back wall and an al pastor sporting whole shavings of pineapple over fatty, rotisserie-cooked pork. If you’re a fan of Tienda Santa Cruz’s traditional style, Tight Tacos should be on your list.
2. Slurp a boozy Sloshy Pop at New Deal
Every Wednesday this summer, Cheryl Lisowski and Carl Forsman of Sloshy Pops set up their turquoise, pedal-powered cart outside New Deal Distillery to peddle handmade, hooch-fueled ice pops. Two recent flavors: spicy raspberry margarita, zapped with New Deal’s pepper-flavored Hot Monkey vodka, and a seriously tasty blueberry daiquiri, which boasted whole booze-soaked berries. Find some shade and enjoy—these puppies melt fast.
3. Drink in Tastebud’s surprising cocktail menu
The unexpected find at Southwest Portland’s spiffy locavore pizza spot? Playful cocktails featuring farm flowers, seasonal fruits and maybe even bitters made by a server. Try the Nature Documentary: a tall, savory sip of yerba mate-infused tequila, turmeric syrup and coconut puree, and garnished with a toy lion walking on lime zest grass.
