From Oregon Cider Week to doughnuts to Nicaraguan coffee, here’s some of what’s happening right now.

A global pandemic hasn’t stopped everything. Here’s a roundup of Portland food news, including the ninth annual weeklong celebration of Oregon’s finest handcrafted ciders—socially distanced, of course. 

St. Jack and Alter Ego Cider

An ode to the bouchons of Lyon, St. Jack’s rustic French selections are the result of years of culinary study, passion, and mastery. Whether it’s salt cod croquettes, chilled prawns in vadouvan aioli, smoked pork poutine with Gruyère and marinated peppers, or simmering tripe soup, many of St. Jack’s delicacies are available for takeout on a rotating to-go menu. The restaurant in Northwest is partnering with local small-batch Alter Ego Cider. Celebrate cider week from home by ordering a dinner and cider pairing online.

Amalfi’s and Double Mountain’s Perry Cider 

As one of Portland’s first pizza spots, Amalfi's has been serving up pies since 1959. The family-owned trattoria on NE Fremont Street offers classic Italian comfort food made with both local and European-imported ingredients, handcrafted cocktails, and a wide selection of beer and wine. For Oregon Cider Week, Amalfi’s is pairing its coveted “Spicy Noma 54”—smothered with tomato sauce, Italian sausage, pepperoni, spinach, and Mama Lil’s peppers—with Double Mountain’s Perry Cider, a delicate brew made from Hood River’s comice and starkrimson pears. There are plans for a socially distanced outdoor tent for pizza, complimentary cider tastings, and live music.

Doughnuts, Doughnuts, and More Doughnuts ...

… because who says you have to choose just one? Portland Cider Co has your back (and your sweet tooth) as it partners with four local bakeries for its annual cider-and-doughnuts pairing event. The combos, which will be available for pickup from Portland Cider Co’s SE Hawthorne and Clackamas locations on June 27, may include classic treats from Blue Star Donuts or Delicious Donuts, dairy-free and gluten-free delights from Kyra’s Bake Shop, or vegan goodies from Gluten Free Gem Bakery. Order your doughnut bundle online and enjoy the festival to go. 

Rooted in the Gorge and Slopeswell Cider

The brick-and-mortar café and catering company Rooted in the Gorge currently prepares fully cooked, easily assembled meal kits for two, for those looking to savor a gourmet dinner at home. Choose from entrées of savory croque monsieur pie stuffed with melty Gruyère and mushrooms or smoked ham, Moroccan-spiced chicken or sweet potato tagine, and finish with buttery chai tea shortbread cookies ready in minutes in the oven. All pair well with Slopeswell’s Old World–style, Hood River–made cider. Cider and dinner kits are available for pick up June 18 and 19.

Sandino Brothers Coffee

Farm-to-table coffee is here. Every cup of not-your-average joe served at Sandino Brothers originates from beans grown on the Sandino family–owned farm in Nicaragua, shade-grown and handpicked from underneath banana trees and sent directly to Portland. While the original location at SE 72nd and Foster Road is currently closed for remodeling, Sandino Brothers recently opened a new location for pickup seven days a week on the corner of NE Sandy Boulevard and 57th Avenue. Known for its Latino-inspired flavors, the menu offers everything from horchata lattes to the customer-favorite café de olla, a coffee brewed with cardamom, cinnamon, piloncillo, and sweet orange rinds. In addition to bagels and pastries, you can watch hot mini doughnuts being prepared on-site, finished with warm drizzles of dulce de leche or sprinkled with chile sugar. Sandino Brothers plans to open the doors for inside seating after Multnomah County enters Phase I on June 19.
