Tour Portland's Sharpest Modern Homes (With a Discount!)

The annual Portland Modern Home Tour steps inside some of the city's most forward-thinking residential design.

By Zach Dundas April 8, 2015

Launched in 2011 as a spin-off from an Austin event, the Portland Modern Home Tour opens eight residences—typically flooded with natural light, full of clean lines and progressive building materials, and glazed to a fare–thee–well—each year. "These tend to be the houses people drive by and say, man, I wish I could see the inside," says Ken Shallcross of the tour's national parent company. "Unless you're a friend or family member, this is your chance."

Longtime local architecture writer Brian Libby curates the Portland tour. This year, his selections range from a sparkling East Burnside apartment building to an imposing black cube in the West Hills to a fab modernist house boat. The houses open for the self-guided, self-paced tour from 11 am to 5 pm, April 25; use the code "pdxmonthly" for a $5 discount on each $30 advance ticket.
