Fried Egg I’m in Love, one of Portland’s breakfast sandwich favorites, will open its first brick-and-mortar on Thursday, January 24.

The pun-riddled food cart began life in 2012 near SE 32nd and Hawthorne with an ode to the Cure song, “It’s Friday, I’m in Love.” Jace Krause and Ryan Lynch (bandmates in garage-rock outfit Fort Union) piloted a simple menu of over-medium eggs griddled between buttered sourdough, solid fillings, and excellent wordplay: Free-Range Against the Machine, Yolko Ono, and Sriracha Mix-A-Lot, to name a few.

In 2017, they added a second cart location at Pioneer Square. Now, they’re opening up just down the street from the original location, inside the old Blue Star Donuts space at 3549 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Hours: daily, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

What’s new? More veggie options for one, from plant-based egg substitutes to vegan sausage. Krause hints at a new vegan barbecue partnership, and new sandwiches, like the greens-filled Al Green. Also on the docket: hash browns and breakfast cocktails. The latter will include some kind of Bloody Mary invention, mimosas, and a whiskey-cold brew concoction.
