In 2006, J. Crew acquired and reinvented Madewell–a small denim brand around since 1937–using the jean geniuses (and adding basic pieces) to fill out their company with a side line that offered a more casual aesthetic. Eight years later, that side project has emerged as a global megabrand with fans flocking from all over the world to the signature Americana vibe. Next week, Portland continues its courting of national lines (read our article on the growing collection of big fashion names) with Madewell opening its first Oregon location in the Brewery Blocks.
Taking over the former Diesel location, Madewell promises to offer the same “General Store” vibe as all the shops, along with their signature looks of denim, chambray tops, simple summer dresses, and sandals galore. And though the brand may be a big box, they’re trying to think small. Along with the in-house line, our PDX location will offer handpicked pieces from local designers. The shop will carry select jewelry from AK Vintage, specially packaged soap combinations from Maak Lab, and a fancy wood/ceramic/tiny cute cactus combo from artist Haley Ann Robinson and interior designer Caser Keasler. Be the first to see these exclusive pieces (and scope out your new summer wardrobe) at the Grand Opening Party.
Wednesday, April 30, the store officially opens at 10 am with free Bien Fait tote bags given out all day with every purchase (until they run out). If you hit the shop from 6–8 pm expect free bubbly flowing along with snacks and tunes to make that first shopping experience all the more fun.
But for those that just can’t wait, we have a Madewell Transport Tote to give away. Just leave us a comment letting us know your can’t-live-without-it summer style piece and we’ll pick a winner the day the shop opens.
