WINE EVENT SPOTLIGHT

Aviary’s Hair Metal Wine Dinner

Portland’s star chefs will unite for a night of food, drink, and rock & roll, featuring wines produced by former heavy metal musicians.

Hells Bells Sauvignon Blanc, Back in Black Shiraz, Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon and Thunderstruck Chardonnay: these are AC/DC’s very real contributions to the wine world.

And they’re not the only former rockers smashing grapes instead of guitars these days. Queensryche’s Geoff Tate partnered with Walla Walla’s Three Rivers winery to produce his Insania label. Warrant’s Erik Turner sells his wines with copies of his album “Born Again.” And Whitesnake’s David Coverdale produced a Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 brimming with “sexy, slippery Snakeyness.”

So, what does a snakey Sauvignon taste like? Find out at Aviary’s hair metal wine dinner on January 15!  Four of Portland’s rock star chefs will team up with Aviary’s Sarah Pliner, Jasper Shen, and Kat Whitehead to prepare five courses paired with wines produced by heavy metal musicians. Participating chefs include Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon, Jason French of Ned Ludd, Aaron Barnett of St. Jack, and Kir Jensen of the Sugar Cube. In addition to wines from members of Queensryche, AC/DC, Whitesnake, and Warrant, guests will be served Cabo Wabo Tequila produced by Sammy Hagar. Yes, it's going to be that kind of party.

The rockin’ five-course dinner is $85 per person, including pairings. Hair metal fans and oenophiles alike can make reservations by calling Aviary at 503-287-2400.
