Shut Up and Eat expands to a DIY sandwich-building deli, Growlers Hawthorne debuts with 40 taps, Mi Mero Mole offers Super Bowl snacks, and more of the city's hottest food stories.

SE Gladstone: On January 31st, super sized Italian sandwich shop Shut Up and Eat will open a deli next door to complement their generous Philly-inspired offerings. The small retail area will load up classic side dishes (macaroni and potato salad, deviled eggs, and house pickles) by the pound and stock all the fixin's for an authentic DIY S.U.A.E. sandwich. That includes their gut-expanding, softball-sized meatballs, and custom, foot-long bread from Pearl Bakery. 3848 SE Gladstone

SE Hawthorne: Because there just aren’t enough growler-fill stations in town until every Portlander has one a five minute walk from home, co-owners Lucy Park and Jim Hillman will swing the doors open at Growlers Hawthorne on February 4 at noon. Located at 3343 SE Hawthorne Blvd, the new shop has the distinction being the first dedicated, growlers-only joint in Portland: the 40 taps won’t be available for on-site consumption, only to-go. At least 4 taps will be reserved for cider, mead, and braggot (an old-school mead and beer hybrid), with kombucha and other non-alcoholic beverages available from a separate kegerator. Drink up!

SE Division and NW 5th: If you’re in need of Super Bowl snacks, but gluten makes you fumble, you’re in luck! Mexican eatery Mi Mero Mole, with two locations on SE Division and NW 5th Ave, will be serving up a special take-out roster of game day munchies that includes tamales, mole enchiladas, take-and-bake nachos, chips & dip, and carnitas for the biggest game of the year. NW 23rd: Neighborhood bar and restaurant The Fireside is offering a $25 prix fixe meal through the end of February, including a salad, vegetarian or meat driven entree (think mushroom risotto topped with a duck egg and pecorino or pork belly with flageolet beans and collard greens), and a glass of wine or draft beer.
