Gonzo, one of our favorite Middle Eastern carts known for its thick-skinned falafel, grilled eggplant sabich, and heaping piles of shawarma fries, is taking its Israeli street food to the next level.
Here are the vital updates:
Gonzo is relocating its cart to 32nd and Hawthorne starting March 5 (currently, it’s parked at 950 SE Oak St, next to Basecamp Brewing).
Owner Tal Caspi has launched a new hummus line, featuring creamy, thick, classic “OG,” a version with tsug (a spicy, tangy, cilantro-jalapeno relish), and one with fiery red harissa (fresno chiles, tomato, and bell pepper). Each is worthy of a spot on your next Mid-East spread. Available at Food Front Cooperative NW and Hillsdale locations, Alberta Coop, Sheridan Grocery and Portland Fish Market.
Caspi is starting a new pop-up dubbed “Yafo” to celebrate the hummus eateries of Israel. Yafo will offer Gonzo’s killer hummus trio, served hot, alongside garbanzo beans, meat, olive oil, and pita bread. Yafo will be held at the Hogan’s Goat Kitchen (5222 NE Sacramento) on Mondays, 4 - 9pm, starting March 2.
