Salt & Straw's Tyler Malek

If you’ve always wondered how Salt & Straw dreams up its crazy flavors, or what actually goes into Dracula’s Blood Pudding ice cream, now’s your moment. On Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. S&S co-owner and flavor maestro Tyler Malek will sit down with Portland Monthly’s own food critic, Karen Brooks, for a look at his just-released Salt & Straw Ice Cream Cookbook. (You can check out our review in the May issue.)

Brooks has chronicled the ice cream upstart’s meteoric rise, from its earliest days scooping out of cart in front of Salt & Straw’s original Alberta location in 2011, to its eventual West Coast domination. The intimate conversation, held at Powell’s City of Books on West Burnside, will include insider tips for nailing your own ice cream experiments, a preview of June’s surprise flavors, and Malek’s thinking on creating an ice cream shop for the future as tastes and demands change.
