Any fashion retailer can fill a space with trendy stuff. The good ones, like Tez Hartney, edit each season to contain pieces customers will enjoy for years. “We showcase clean, classic items that still feel young and directional,” Hartney says of the women’s and men’s apparel sold at her Pearl District boutique, Parallel. Here, workhorse items are also fashion thoroughbreds. With delicate pin-tucks at the neckline, a navy silk chiffon dress by House of Hengst is party-ready; the frock goes nine-to-five when layered with a diaphanous sweater by Dear Cashmere or a slimly cut T-shirt by 88 Orange. Trouser jeans by Found Denim and tailored cotton blouses by Nili Lotan also merge style and versatility. For evening, add burnished metal earrings by Sarah McGuire and a blue snakeskin clutch from MS by Martine Sitbon. Hartney’s childhood pal Mannix Arcelona buys the menswear: Trovata’s waxed-cotton mackintosh with wooden buttons, Shipley & Halmos’s black-and-white miniature-houndstooth shirt, and a black Cassette cardigan of cotton and wool may be the perfect transitional pieces for spring.
