Avoid being an unwilling participant in one of those nightmare You Tube videos where an angry mob of shoppers descends into chaos, punching, and spitting by heading straight to friendly local shops this weekend. Over 200 Portland shops have once again banded together under the umbrella of Little Boxes which encourages the idea of shopping local by stores giving 10% off when you show proof of purchase from another Pdx boutique. It’s a simple idea that’s grown over its five years now offering both Android and iPhone apps to make your route planning easier.

A quick reminder that the meaning of Black Friday is it’s the day that shops can go into the black (meaning make a profit) for the year. Doing your holiday shopping at a locally owned shop this weekend actually can be the deciding factor on if that store gets to stick around another year. Little Boxes incentivizes that with the 10% discounts, but also with raffle prizes (you get entries just by showing up to shops) and the prizes this year include a 4-day travel package, iPad Air, and shopping sprees topping $600 (for the full list of prizes click here). Bonus point, most also offer alcohol to shoppers!

Created by Betsy & Iya owners Betsy Cross and Will Cervarich, the two say they’ve seen record-breaking participation this year, with over 220 stores signed up. They’re hope is an expected 20,000+ shoppers will help top last year’s estimated total of $323,500 in additional revenue created by Little Boxes for the participating stores.
