Any bridal industry person worth their weight will tell you the most popular day of the year to get engaged is Christmas eve, so future affianced, take note. After 10 years, wedding gown mainstay The English Department will close its downtown doors.

Owner Liz Gross will take the entire inventory over to be above her other popular boutique, Xtabay, in a vintage salon setting where pink walls and ornate golden fixtures abound.

“The only thing that will be different at The English Department is that it will feature a curated collection of vintage wedding gowns as well as the usual line up of designers.” Gross says. “We will continue to carry bridal gowns by Elizabeth Dye, Leanne Marshall, Claire La Faye, Sarah Janks, Nicole Miller, Jenny Yoo and Claire Pettibone. We hope to be adding a few new designers in the year to come as well.”

In addition to the bigger, fancier space, the boutique plans to switch to appointment only to let each bride have the whole space for trying things on. In a funny twist, The English Dept. will close its downtown location on Christmas Eve (while you're saying yes) and re-open in the new location on January 5th.
