Ermahgerd! The First Big Shopping Sales of 2018 Are Here

I have no evidence to back this up, but I clearly remember reading—somewhere—that the way Nirvana’s Nevermind went from selling 6,000 copies in its first week to bumping Michael Jackson from his throne had to do with holiday gift returns. Stay with me. The theory goes that well-meaning parents gifted their offspring Jackson’s Dangerous album, featuring singles like “Black or White” and “Keep it in the Closet.” Kids like me promptly returned to the record store to trade in the King of Pop for Nevermind. Not long after, on January 11, 1992, Nirvana hit no. 1 on the charts.
What I’m saying: everyone is having a sale now, so take back the stuff you don’t want and get yourself something nice.
