Southeast

♦ Ruby Jewel is opening a third scoop shop at 4707 SE Hawthorne Blvd., between Por Que No and Apizza Scholls. The new location, slated to open in mid-July, will feature outdoor seating and a full menu of ice cream sandwiches, waffle cones, and signature sundaes.

Northeast

♦ Portland’s top tiki man Blair Reynolds (Hale Pele) will branch out later this year when he partners with Coco Donuts owner Ian Christopher to open Americano along East Burnside. The pair envisions the spot, on the ground floor of the Burnside 26 apartment building, as a discerning coffee shop and pastry stop by day and a cocktail haunt devoted to all things amaro with Euro-centric shared plates come dusk.

Southwest

♦ The beloved sandwich honchos at Bunk are opening an outpost in Providence Park just outside the Timbers Stadium. The new location will include a number of classics, like the pork belly cubano and the Iceberg cocktail (beer with frozen margarita), along with a new pulled pork dog with Olympia Provisions frankfurter, pulled pork, and apple-cabbage slaw.

♦ After over two years of exhibitionist modern cooking, Anthony Cafiero’s Racion is closing its West End doors at the end of the month. Modernist cooking is a tough sell in Portland, made even tougher after the departure of talented bar man Chauncey Roach in 2014. Cafiero hints at a possible revival on the east side of town.

Northwest

♦ The Oregonian reports that Chefstable owner Kurt Huffman is now involved in the ongoing legal battle between Besaw’s owner Cana Flug and the building’s landlord C.E. John. Huffman (whose restaurant empire includes neighboring St. Jack) allegedly entered the fray as an intermediary between the two parties to avoid the closure slated for May 30, while offering to provide operational support if its employees took cooperative ownership over from Flug; he was reportedly rebuffed by both Flug and her staff.
