In 2007, Rose Haven opened its doors to provide direct support to Portland’s homeless and abused women and children. The nonprofit day shelter and community center gives women a place to be together and offers weekly access to counselors and advocates who assist with housing options. Those in need are able to access meals onsite, as well as clothing, diapers, toiletries, and feminine hygiene products. Without any access to federal funding, the group relies entirely on in-kind donations from corporations and a big Mother’s Day bash each year. This is where you come in.

This year, Rose Haven aims to raise $150,000 this Mother's Day, beginning with a pre-funk party at Castaway in Slabtown, followed by a 5k through Nob Hill. The day ends with a reception back at the starting line with food, live music, mimosas, face painting, clowns, prizes and giveaways.

“Hospitality is our calling card for the care of each service provided," says Rose Haven board chair and walk founder Kathy Kelly on what sets Rose Haven apart from other shelters. "It’s all in the details: Meals are served on a tablecloth with volunteers serving and offering choices, donated clothing is organized like a store to shop from, and we offer longer shower times with extra sundries."

Walk registration opened on March 8—International Women’s Day. “Because Rose Haven is so heavily supported by community with in-kind products and volunteer support, it costs only $189 to serve a woman or child for an entire year," Kelly says. "Raising $150,000 would allow us to provide a year of food, clothing, advocacy, support, and love to 794 people.”
